News: Bukit Kukus Paired Highway To Open In August 2020

Aug 8, 2019

Road users can look forward to the new Jalan Paya Terubong (Jalan Bukit Kukus) paired highway connecting Relau and Paya Terubong by August next year, as construction works at the highway is now 78 percent complete.

Jagdeep Singh Deo, Penang Town and Country Planning and Local Government Committee chairman, said the project should have reached 86 percent completion but due to unforeseen circumstances, it had to be suspended temporarily and restarted last February, reported Bernama.

“Although less than eight percent (compared to the original schedule) of the completion phase (was delayed) due to the landslide in October last year, it will still reach its target period and the project is expected to be completed by July next year and will be opened by August 2020,” he said.

“With this paired highway, it will solve the traffic congestion faced by Paya Terubong road users.”

Started on 14 January 2016 at RM545.6 million cost, the project was temporarily stopped after a landslide in 19 October 2018 caused injuries to four foreign workers and death to nine others.

Construction works resumed on 28 February, following the Department of Occupational Safety and Health’s (DOSH) approval.
